Lecturers: Prof. Dr. Volkhard Helms, Barbara Hutter

Tutor: Barbara Hutter

Time: Tuesday, 10:15 am - 11:45 am, building E1 3, seminar room 0,14

Requirements: knowledge according to "Genetics" lecture of Prof. Walter

Condition for certification (likely): at least 50% of points from the 10 weekly assignments, one paper presentation, and passing of three short tests on May 19th, June 16th, and July 14th. The grade is then computed as the average of the three short tests.

Leistungspunkte/Credit points: 5 (V2/Ü1)

This course is taught in English language.

Lecture form: The lecture will cover various topics in current genetics. The students will be forced to work actively throughout the whole semester. Each lecture will introduce a new topic and students will be given one paper from the current original literature on this topic. The assignment sheet will consist of questions about this paper. Answers have to be submitted electronically by Thursday 24 pm. The assignments will be corrected until Monday of the following week and the solutions will be discussed in the tutorial on Monday. One group of 2-3 volunteer students will present the main scientific findings of the paper at the beginning of the next lecture. Each student has to present at least once during the semester. The presentations will not be graded.

Topics to be covered:

This course will enter into details of three topics in current genetics:

  • (I) genomes and transcription, nuclear compartments, chromatin structure
  • (II) epigenetics: histone code, DNA methylation, imprinting, methylation in cancer
  • (III) cellular programming: circadian clocks, stem cells
